This year I wanted to try and find reasons to like winter. No easy task.
Now I am not going to say I forgive winter for everything that is awful about it but I will say that this one has been filled with a lot of the ferocious joy I usually only associate with summer days.
For an early birthday present I tried ice climbing, and because the class at Cornell was fully booked with an endless waitlist, I went with EMS in New Paltz instead. I’ve done group classes with a bunch of strangers like this before and I was surprised then at how lucky I was to end up with such a great group of people. Now I think that it’s just great people who go out and try things like this.
We went to a beautiful spot on Kaaterskill Creek where the creek was frozen and walls of rock rose up on either side with the ice falling down like ribbons. It was beautiful, the skies were blue, I was freezing, and I wouldn’t have traded a single second of it to be anywhere else.
On my way out of town the sun was setting and I stopped to snap a photo and think that if more winter days were like this, I could get by.
