The Return of the Light

The winter solstice has come. Each day will get a little longer and a little lighter. I think about how things happen by degrees. Each day feels cold and bleak and the same and the same and the same and then all of a sudden, it’s summer again. And fall again. And winter again. And Spring again.

Or like for a while it feels like you’ll never grow up and then you look around and you’re at middle age.

Changes happen so slowly that sometimes you don’t see them until it’s like it happened all at once.

I hope as the light is returning I learn how to watch it. I hope I can spot the small differences in the day to day, the extra minutes of light, of time.

I hope I can watch my nieces grow and actually see it happening. I hope I can watch myself grow and actually see it happening. It takes so long to become who we are and it happens so slowly, I hope I don’t miss it
