The gorges of the Finger Lakes area of Upstate NY were made when the glaciers receded and left eleven great big cuts in the earth behind. The cuts became the lakes, the water that feeds them became the gorges.
I told someone once that I’d been to a lot of places, and I felt the Finger Lakes were one of the prettiest. He disagreed, he thought someplace in Canada was better, but I stand by it.
My only regret actually came from my boss with Cornell Outdoor Education. He mentioned casually that if only the rock were a little different, what a world class rock climbing location this could be.
Then again, if the rock were a little different, it wouldn’t look like this. And if the world didn’t look like this, what would even be the point?
