This was a weekend for birthdays. My niece turned three on Friday and I turned a different age on Monday. So in the spirit of doing things instead of buying things, I took my nieces to Dynamic Ceramic in Horseheads, NY to paint ceramics. My mom came to help which was good because otherwise I would have been outnumbered by children wielding paint.
It was a total mess. Literally, though… those kids just slapped any old color on there in any order. It horrified me in every particle of my being.
I also found it oddly surprising that my younger niece was a lot more decisive, she knew what she wanted to paint and she knew what colors she wanted and she didn’t spend any time debating the fact. My older niece was a little slower to choose but eventually wanted to paint a unicorn (the younger one wanted a Dinosaur and knew this before we even arrived.) The painting went quickly because they both got tired of it and me and my mom finished slathering paint over the ceramic surfaces while the girls ate cupcakes I had brought for them.
We all had a good time and if you are in the area, you should definitely check Dynamic Ceramic out. They require reservations and there is plenty of space for social distancing so it is a relatively safe activity to get you out of the house in these COVID times.
For my birthday I… kind of gave myself permission to do nothing. I mean I wanted to do something and all that. I was just tired and had been focusing on plans for my niece’s birthday and forgot to plan anything for me. So I just took the day off, literally, I took the day off work, and I took the day off of responsibilities. I sat in the afternoon sunshine that came in our front windows with the dog. I made myself sushi for dinner.
I love the phrase “taking another trip around the sun”, because here I go, on another ride at 67,000 miles per hour, hurling around the sun.
