An Introduction to Adventure

“I did something…” I told my husband on a dark and bitterly cold Thursday night in late February. We were laying on our bed after dinner, lavishing attention on our 8 year old pitbull mutt, named Chief.

“What?” He said skeptically. I left the room and came back with a plastic wrapped Amazon package. “You bought more stuff online?” He said this dismally like I was the main culprit of frivolous use of Amazon Prime in our house. I tore open the resealable plastic bag and proudly showed him the slack line I had purchased for $27.51 on a lightning deal. For those of you who don’t know: a slackline is essentially a 2 inch strap you tie between two trees and then you try and walk across it like a tightrope. He shook his head at me.

“Why?” He said

“Can we try it this weekend?” I said, with what I can only assume was a manic gleam in my eye.

“Sure baby.” He sighed.

Hello! My name is Kaitlyn Miller and I am a Graphic Designer for a company that sells dry cleaning supplies. Hey, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. This is my first blog and also my first step outside what I worry may be an insurmountable comfort zone. This is a pretty serious first step because who makes a blog anymore, really? The only way I was able to force myself to do this was by sitting down and buying a domain name and hosting services. Now that money is involved, I’m committed. I’m accountable. I have to see this thing through.

But what exactly is this thing? THIS is a quest for more excitement, more fun and dare I say it, more adventures.

You may at this moment be asking yourself “why?” just like my husband did when I told him I’d taken up a sudden urge to begin tightrope walking. The honest answer is this: I’m trying to save my own life. I don’t mean like, from death or anything dramatic like that. I mean I want to save my life. I don’t really seem to do anything anymore because I am so “busy” and I’m tired all of the time from the endless rhythm of wake up, go to work, make dinner, do the dishes, walk the dog, go to bed, wake up, do the laundry, clean the house, etc, etc in a never ending cycle of adulting. I want to get out, do things, and not merely survive adulthood, but actually enjoy it. I don’t mean to steal or butcher anyone’s motivational quote here, but… I want to fall in love with being alive again.

So if you have any suggestions for weird, dumb, fun, adventurous, or otherwise strange and exciting things to do… please email me at adventmill@gmail.com.

In the meantime, I’ll get started!

Action items for you:
Make a bucket list. What have you always wanted to do?

If you want to do what
Buy a slackline. Because it’s funny. Here are some options I found:

The one I bought: Trailblaze Premium Slackline Kit for $27.51. This was a lightning deal so it’s a bit more expensive now. Knowing nothing about slacklines I have no complaints about this one, it was easy to set up and it works like I imagine a slackline should.

This Gibbon brand one. Gibbon is apparently a big name in slacklines so if you’re looking to be more serious you might want to check that out.

This Zero Gravity Slackline Kit and this flybold Slackline Kit are two others I was considering before buying the one I have. This was based solely on quantity of good reviews and price as I know nothing about slacklines.

Watch some videos on YouTube about how to slackline, and/or watch my video about how NOT to slackline:
