Go to the Limits of Your Longing

Rainer Maria Rilke’s Poem says:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.

I was thinking about this poem a lot this weekend. I was thinking about going to the limits of my longing as I went climbing in the Gunks and hiking in Chimney Bluffs and the weather was perfect. I was thinking about letting everything happen to me. I hope you let everything happen to you, beauty and terror. I hope you live so big and so brightly, you make big shadows, like golden hour in the Autumn. Rilke goes on to say:

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
