In late Winter when I see robins I know Spring is coming.
In late Summer when I see deer I know Winter is coming.
This week I saw two doe and two fawns in the cemetery in Ithaca. I saw two bucks and two doe in my neighbors yard when I let the dog out. I saw two doe and one fawn beside the parking lot when I pulled into work.
I wonder at the changing seasons and how the animal in me feels it. The light is different. The smell is different. It’s only by degrees, it doesn’t happen all it once. It doesn’t even happen noticeably, but instinct tells me it is. Like the deer, I feel like it’s time to eat. It’s time to store energy. It’s time for last calls to adventure before the gray days start to come.
