Don’t Eat Wild Mushrooms

This weekend I was learning about top rope anchors. But I was thinking about how much has changed in a year.

A year ago climbing outdoors seemed like an impossible goal. A year ago I took an outdoor anchor building class and it all seemed too overwhelming, too much, too scary. I felt that anchors were like wild mushrooms, sure, maybe I’d be able to identify them, but would I trust my life to my knowledge?

A year ago the answer was no.

Tonight my answer was yes. To the ropes, not the mushrooms. Don’t eat mushrooms you find in the woods, you’ll die.

The knowledge that a year ago seemed unattainable now seems to be a part of me. I listened to the same words under the same trees, all with 1 more ring around their trunks.

But this time I listened with the confidence that I can do this, and so much more.
